Soak in the fascinating history of Wroclaw and discover the city's cultural and architectural treasures on our walking tour of the Old Town.
Our tour starts in the heart of Wroclaw, Poland's second biggest Market Square (Rynek) dominated by the impressive 13th-century town hall and bordered by a rainbow of beautifully renovated historical buildings. Your guide takes you next across Salt Square (Plac Solny), renowned for 24h traditional flower stalls, and continues past the City Museum of History (formerly the Prussian Royal Palace) to reach Swidnicka Street. For centuries this was the most important street in Wroclaw often used by merchants travelling along the Amber Road from southern Europe towards the Baltic Sea. This part of the Old Town boasts several distinguished public buildings, department stores, hotels, churches and statues. One statue in particular has great significance in recent history of Wroclaw and it features a gnome. Yes, that's right, amongst many other names Wroclaw nowadays is renowed for little figures of gnomes founded in memory of the 1980s peaceful anti-communist student protest group called the Orange Alternative.
Our leisurely stroll takes you next through medieval cobbled streets to the magnificent Wroclaw University, regarded as one of the finest examples of Baroque in Central Europe. During a tour of the inside your knowledgeable guide brings you closer to the building's impressive art and architecture, not forgetting about humorous tales of academic life of local students. After a little break the tour continues to the historical modernist Market Hall and the picturesque riverside promenade on Piasek Island. Another bridge (Tumski also known as Love Bridge) takes you next onto enchanting Cathedral Island (Ostrow Tumski). This spiritual hub is the oldest part of the city, home to several churches, street gas lamps and beautiful Botanic Gardens. Your tour ends with a visit to the historic Cathedral of St John the Baptist.
